Because most of the chronic respiratory diseases are under-diagnosed, under-treated and the access to essential medications in many countries is poor, a global effort to improve the diagnosis and the medical care is needed. The Global Alliance was officially launched on 28 March 2006 in Beijing, People's Republic of China.
The preparatory process leading towards ICN2 was jointly organized by FAO and WHO. FAO and WHO are both helping governments in their national efforts to address malnutrition, which currently affects more than half the world’s population and represents the single biggest contributor to child mortality. One of the major problems encountered in many countries is the lack of policy coherence across sectors -- ranging from trade to agriculture and public health -- to ensure that all people have access to adequate, safe, diversified and nutrient-rich food that contribute to healthy diets.

Through panel discussions and case studies, the participants discussed how INFOSAN activities should be linked to other food safety programs in the region and be bridged with the International Health Regulations (2005). They shared experiences and national solutions between countries on various aspects of food safety. Most importantly, participants worked in small groups and contributed to the development of a new strategic document which will guide regional participation in INFOSAN. Proactive participation of countries in INFOSAN will lead to timelier response to food safety emergencies and protection of public health.
